Short answer: most plumbing companies should treat Search Ads and Local Services Ads as two different ways to capture the same commercial intent. Search Ads give you more control over keywords, services, landing pages and bidding. Local Services Ads can put a verified provider high on the page and charge for leads rather than clicks, where the format is available.

My usual starting point: build tightly structured Google Search campaigns first when you need control over services, locations and lead tracking. Add Local Services Ads when the business is eligible, has the required verification and reviews, and can respond to leads quickly.

There is no universal winner. The better option depends on your service mix, market, response time, website and ability to tell Google which enquiries became profitable jobs.

Search Ads and Local Services Ads are not the same

Google explains that Local Services Ads use business details such as service area, working hours and services offered. The available categories and checks differ by market, so confirm current eligibility in Google’s Local Services Ads overview.

Why plumber PPC is difficult

Plumbing searches combine high urgency with a small decision window. A homeowner with a burst pipe may call the first credible provider who answers. Someone planning a boiler replacement, water-heater installation or bathroom project will compare more carefully. Treating those searches as one campaign makes budgets hard to control.

The challenge is not simply getting clicks. It is separating emergency repairs, routine work and higher-value installation enquiries, then measuring which calls were actually relevant.

  • Urgent searches: emergency plumber, burst pipe repair, blocked drain, plumber open now.
  • Service-led searches: boiler repair in the UK, water-heater repair in the US, drain cleaning, leak detection and sewer line work.
  • Low-value or irrelevant searches: jobs, salaries, training, DIY advice, parts and searches outside the service area.

When Search Ads are the better starting point

Choose Google Search Ads when you want to decide exactly which jobs receive budget. A plumbing company can separate drain cleaning from boiler work, show different messages by city and send each visitor to the most relevant landing page.

1. You need control over high-ticket services

If one service is worth far more than another, it deserves its own campaign, budget and conversion feedback. Search Ads make that separation easier. You can bid differently for emergency repair, planned installation and commercial work rather than placing everything inside one general campaign.

2. You work across different towns or service areas

Location settings should match where the business can realistically send an engineer or technician. I normally combine geographic targeting with location language in ads and landing pages, then review where enquiries actually originated. This matters in London, Manchester, Birmingham, New York, Houston and every other competitive market where a wide radius can spend quickly.

3. You have service-specific landing pages

A search for “blocked drain plumber” should not land on a generic homepage that lists fifteen unrelated services. The page should confirm the job, area, availability, proof and next action. Strong message matching can improve both conversion rate and lead quality.

4. You want deeper conversion tracking

Search Ads can track website calls, calls from ads, forms and other useful actions. Google’s guide to phone-call conversion tracking explains the available call sources. For better optimisation, record which enquiries became qualified appointments or booked jobs and import that outcome where practical.

When Local Services Ads deserve budget

Local Services Ads are attractive when your category and location are eligible, verification is complete and the team answers quickly. The format is designed around local leads and can support calls, messages and bookings. Google also provides lead and job management tools inside the platform.

They can be particularly useful for emergency work because the customer can act directly from the ad. However, the profile cannot compensate for poor availability, weak reviews or slow follow-up.

Important: do not compare platforms only by cost per lead. A £25 or $40 call that becomes a valuable job may be better than a £10 lead that never answers. Track qualified enquiries, quotes and booked revenue whenever the business can supply that feedback.

A practical Google Ads campaign structure for plumbers

A useful account structure follows the way customers search and the way the business delivers work. It does not need dozens of campaigns. It needs enough separation to control budgets and write relevant ads.

Campaign 1: emergency plumbing

Use for urgent jobs such as burst pipes, severe leaks, blocked drains and no hot water when the business can respond. Schedule ads only when calls can be answered. If overnight cover is unavailable, do not advertise “24 hour plumber”.

Campaign 2: planned repairs and maintenance

Use for less urgent searches such as tap repair, toilet repair, drain maintenance and leak detection. These searches may be cheaper but still need strong local relevance.

Campaign 3: installations and valuable projects

Separate boiler replacement, water-heater installation, bathroom plumbing or commercial plumbing when these jobs have different margins and sales cycles. Use forms as well as calls because customers may research before booking.

Keyword themes for the UK and USA

IntentUK wording examplesUS wording examples
Urgentemergency plumber near me, burst pipe repair, blocked drain plumber24 hour plumber, emergency plumbing service, burst pipe repair
Heating and hot waterboiler repair, boiler replacement, no hot water plumberwater heater repair, tankless water heater installation, no hot water
Drain and sewerdrain unblocking, blocked sink plumber, drainage plumberdrain cleaning, sewer line repair, hydro jetting
Local modifiersplumber + town, postcode or areaplumber + city, neighbourhood or ZIP area

These are starting themes, not a list to paste blindly into an account. Match types, bids and negatives should reflect the budget and the search-term data. “Plumber” on broad match can attract research, training and DIY traffic if the account lacks guardrails.

Negative keywords that protect plumbing budgets

Common exclusions often include jobs, salary, course, apprenticeship, DIY, free, tools, supplies and parts. The correct list depends on the services. A merchant selling plumbing parts would obviously make different choices.

The tracking setup that changes optimisation

Google can optimise only towards the actions it receives. If every button click is counted as a conversion, the account may look healthy while the phone stays quiet. Set primary conversions around real lead actions:

  • Calls from ads that pass a sensible duration threshold.
  • Calls from the website using dynamic number replacement where appropriate.
  • Completed quote or booking forms, not page views.
  • Qualified or booked outcomes imported from a CRM or call log when possible.

Google’s conversion measurement documentation covers website, phone and local actions. The technical setup matters, but the operational feedback matters just as much. Someone should mark spam, wrong-area calls and low-value enquiries so campaign decisions reflect the real business.

How much should a plumber spend on Google Ads?

There is no responsible fixed answer without location and keyword data. A starting budget should be large enough to buy a meaningful number of clicks in the target market without risking more than the business can afford to learn from.

Use this planning formula:

Estimated monthly click budget = expected cost per click × the number of clicks needed for a useful test.

Then compare the likely leads with job value, close rate and operational capacity. If the calculation requires more spend than the business can support, narrow the area or start with fewer services.

Do not divide a tiny budget across ten campaigns. Concentrate it on the service and locations with the clearest value, then expand after you know what converts.

A 30-day launch checklist

  1. Confirm the profitable services, exclusions and realistic service area.
  2. Separate urgent, routine and installation intent.
  3. Create relevant ads and service-specific landing pages.
  4. Set up call and form conversion tracking before launch.
  5. Use phrase and exact targeting as controlled foundations, then expand carefully.
  6. Review search terms several times during the early learning period.
  7. Listen to or classify calls where consent and local law allow.
  8. Feed qualified leads and booked jobs back into reporting.

Frequently asked questions

Are Google Ads worth it for plumbers?

They can be when the service value, local demand, website and response process support the click costs. The account must be built around profitable jobs, not traffic alone.

Are Local Services Ads better than Search Ads?

Not in every market. Local Services Ads can produce direct local leads, while Search Ads offer more control over keywords, pages and service-level budgets. Many established plumbing businesses use both and judge them by qualified lead and booked-job cost.

Should plumbers bid on “plumber near me”?

It is a strong commercial theme, but it can be competitive and broad. Test it with clear location settings, useful negatives and call tracking. Do not assume every nearby search is inside the service area or worth the same amount.

What should a plumbing landing page include?

Confirm the service and area immediately. Add clear contact options, hours, proof, licences or qualifications where relevant, real reviews, common jobs and a short explanation of what happens after the customer calls.

Can Google Ads track booked jobs?

Yes, but it usually requires the business to connect call, form or CRM outcomes back to the original ad interaction. Basic tracking shows leads. Offline conversion data helps show which leads became qualified opportunities or revenue.

What I would review in your account

If you already run plumber PPC campaigns, I would start with the search terms, location settings, conversion actions, call quality and the services receiving budget. If you have not launched yet, I would review local demand, the website and the value of the jobs you want more of.
